F-301B Equirus Orbital Fighter

Description

This was a forgotten design from the Dive into the Sky side story I had going with :iconsouji-murakumo: from which I finally got around to making. It's pilot is Alice Hartmann, an Ace in the Orbital Squadron "Endeavor". Alice's version (shown on the left) is specially built to accommodate her poor eyesight by compensating a plug-in unit from the space craft to her an optical terminal. The machine is not modified any different from other front line models other than supporting the FINA cockpit system. The model shown on the right is a standard cockpit version

This Strato-Fighter can take-off conventionally and by booster support. Boosters can be attached in two forms by vertical attachment (booster) or by bolt-on pack on the fuselage (conventional). Its scheme is reminiscent of the old Space Shuttle style pattern used by the orbiters. Each Orbital Squadron is based on the old names as well:

Active Squadrons F-301B
------------------------
Atlantis Orbital Squadron
Columbia Orbital Squadron
Endeavor Orbital Squadron

Active Squadrons F-19A
-----------------------
Enterprise Orbital Squadron
Challenger Orbital Squadron
Discovery Orbital Squadron

The pattern is also shared with the F-19A light fighter units and squadrons and are only distinctively different by squadrons markings or emblems. This fighter was based on the Zebra F-301 Ballpoint Pen design.

I feel kind of bad I never got anywhere with that story idea, but I just can't seem to get anywhere when I sit down to actually write. Anyway, that's a nice looking plane, especially if it started as a pen. Also an unexpected surprise to see it turn up in the hangar over here.
